INTRODUCTION

Dr. Leah Kaylor is a licensed clinical psychologist, prescribing/medical psychologist, forensic psychologist, professor, author, and internationally recognized speaker specializing in sleep, trauma, resilience, and psychological health among law enforcement, military personnel, first responders, and other high-stress professionals. She has extensive experience working with individuals exposed to critical incidents, cumulative occupational stress, trauma, and disrupted sleep. Her professional work spans clinical practice, public safety and forensic psychological assessment, psychopharmacology, behavioral sleep medicine, teaching, and organizational training.

Dr. Kaylor has worked extensively for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), providing psychological services and specialized support to law enforcement personnel. Her work has included trauma-focused intervention, critical incident support and debriefings, psychological consultation, and individualized sleep services. She specializes in the intersection of sleep, trauma, occupational stress, and performance and has particular expertise in insomnia, nightmares, posttraumatic stress, and sleep disruption among individuals working in demanding operational environments. Dr. Kaylor is certified in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Brainspotting and has advanced training and experience in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), and Imagery Rehearsal Therapy (IRT).

Dr. Kaylor completed advanced postdoctoral education in clinical psychopharmacology and practices as a prescribing psychologist/medical psychologist. Her combined background in clinical psychology, behavioral sleep medicine, trauma treatment, and psychopharmacology allows her to integrate behavioral and medication-based approaches to treatment. She has a particular interest in utilizing evidence-based non-medication interventions for sleep whenever clinically appropriate while recognizing the role medication may have as part of comprehensive psychological care.

Dr. Kaylor also maintains an active forensic and public safety assessment practice. She conducts psychological evaluations involving children and adults referred by courts, child protective services, attorneys, and other organizations. Her forensic work includes evaluations involving trauma, abuse and neglect, cognitive and intellectual functioning, academic and behavioral concerns, competency, guardianship and decision-making capacity, and other complex clinical and forensic questions. She also conducts pre-employment psychological evaluations for law enforcement, corrections, detention, security, fire, emergency medical services, and other public safety positions. Her public safety work is informed by her extensive experience working directly with law enforcement and first responders and her understanding of the psychological and operational demands of these professions.

Dr. Kaylor earned her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Saint Louis University, a master's degree in forensic Mental Health Counseling from John Jay College of Criminal Justice, and a postdoctoral Master of Science in Clinical Psychopharmacology from Fairleigh Dickinson University. She is also a professor who has taught psychology at multiple colleges and universities, including courses in forensic psychology, forensic assessment, psychopathology and diagnosis, and psychopharmacology.

Dr. Kaylor is an internationally recognized speaker who provides training to law enforcement agencies, military organizations, first responders, clinicians, and professional associations. She has presented nationally and internationally on sleep, trauma, resilience, suicide prevention, mental health, occupational stress, and wellness. Her trainings translate psychological and sleep science into practical strategies for individuals and organizations, with particular attention to critical incidents, cumulative sleep deprivation, insomnia, nightmares, circadian disruption, and chronic occupational stress. She also works with leaders to address the organizational factors that influence employee sleep, mental health, resilience, and long-term career functioning.

Dr. Kaylor is the author of the bestselling book: If Sleep Were a Drug, which explores the science of sleep and its relationship to mental health, physical health, performance, and resilience. Across her clinical, forensic, academic, prescribing, and educational work, her career has focused on applying psychological science to improve the health, functioning, resilience, and performance of those serving in high-stress and public safety professions.
